OPINION: Is APC truly democratic? A test of Lagos state local government election primaries


Editor’s note: Since 1999 imposition of candidates for political offices by political parties has become an order of the day. From the former ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the current ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), there were cases of candidates being imposed on people each time there was an election. Recently, Lagos state chapter of APC held local government election primaries but the rather than allow delegates to vote for their respective candidates, the party hierarchy was said to resort to imposition of candidates as an alternative to primary election.


"Alimosho electioneering processes within and between political parties have always been nightmare and bizarrely experienced. For the fact there is no strongly structured opposition, this has made the ruling party in Alimosho play their politics both dirty and rough. Imposition is the order of the day and credible candidates are either asked to step down or rig out of the game. "The political office holders in the largest local government in Nigeria (Alimosho) have always been orchestrated to favour the interest of the microscopic few within the ruling party, at the expense of the entire 6 million inhabitants, which mostly translate to mismanagement and maladministration.
